Tander appeared to have the race won, until. The gap between the leading pair hovered around a second before McLaughlin began to charge, closing up to the rear bumper of the HRT Commodore and looking for a way past. When the race resumed, Tander and McLaughlin disappeared at the head of the field, edging away from a now third-placed Mark Winterbottom after leapfrogging Whincup in the pit stops.
